Shimon is a man who needs no introduction. He’s one of the artists who set the standard for the legendary Ram Records, with his solo releases, collaborations with Andy C, and as part of the seminal Ram Trilogy. His Audioporn Records label has helped further the careers of artists such as Dirtyphonics, Hybrid Minds, Dizast, High Maintenance, more recently Gino, Leaf & of course Benny L!
On 9th April Innovation team up with Audioporn for a special event to kick off the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, so we thought we’d dig into Shimon’s back catalogue to find 5 definitive cuts that sum up his journey through drum & bass….
Following on from his debut single, The Predator, 1997 saw Shim’s, first of many, collaborations with fellow Hornchurch D&B legend Andy C. Both tracks on this single were HUGE!! Quest (the a-side) and this track Night Flight have both stood the test of time and still sound as good today as when they first came out
The 2nd Andy C collaboration on this list, and this one was a total game changer!! There aren’t many tunes that sound like nothing you’ve heard before, Alex Reece & Doc Scott pioneered the Kick, Snare beat when everyone else was using breakbeats, Dead Dred introduced the world to the Dred Bass which single handedly spawned the sound of UK Garage, Shimon & Andy C’s use of the swing beat on Body Rock was like nothing anyone had heard before! While we all know the track so well these days, it’s easy to forget how different this track sounded when it was released
Ram Trilogy was a 3 way studio team up with Shimon, Ant Miles & Andy C. The trio had an incredible run of top selling singles & EP’s, and the acts debut album Molten Beats was in the bags of literally EVERY drum and bass DJ in the world on it’s release. No Reality is my favourite cut from the Molten Beats album, but I could have picked any of the 12 tracks that featured on there. The album recently got a remastered re-release.
In 2007 Shimon released Humanism on his own Audioporn Records imprint. With echoes of the infamous Quest bassline, that he created a full decade previously, this set the standard for the fledgling label and the direction it would be headed for the future.
Bringing things bang up to date, Shimon teams up with his protege, Benny L, with the sub bass driven Sharks!
With so many big tunes under his belt it’s hard to limit this list to just 5… We barely even touched on the Ram Trilogy classics such as Beastman, Mind Overload, Huggy Bear, Screamer, Milky Way, Titan & too many more to mention!!! Go do some digging for yourself & find your own favourites 🙂
Grab your tickets now to catch Shimon & the rest of the Audioporn Records crew at The Source in Maidstone on Thursday 9th April. Shimon & Benny L will also be performing at Innovation In The Sun this summer in Benidorm.
