DJ Grooverider recently announced that the next release on his pivotal Prototype Recordings imprint would be from our very own Modified Motion & Faction!
Modi has been part of our Innovation line ups from way back in 2001, so we’re proud to see him join legendary names such as Ed Rush & Optical, Dillinja, Bad Company, Photek, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Trace and of course Grooverider himself on one of the most influential labels in the drum and bass scene!
We caught up with Modified Motion to find out more about this forthcoming release….
You must be pleased to be releasing on Prototype? How did the release come about?
Grooverider has been supporting our music for years. He came over to the studio and I played him some new music we had been working on.
He really liked a few tracks and he asked if he could have Run It & Surge for his label. Of course we said yes!
Is Grooverider a fussy A&R man, did he ask for many changes to the original track you submitted?
There were a few changes, we really wanted to get the tracks sounding right.
The overall sound of the label is something special so Faction & I worked overtime to get the edits and mix on point.
Prototype has seen releases from some of the biggest D&B artists, what is your favourite track from the back catalogue & why?
There are way too many amazing tracks on that label to even try to answer that question! Just look at the artists that have realised on there… Every single track that has ever come out on Prototype has been seminal, we’re just blessed to now be part of that legacy!!
How do you approach making music? Any production tips you can share with up & coming producers?
We have to be focused, I am based in London & Matt (Faction) is on the other side of the Atlantic so those ideas need to be shared and communicated. While it can be a challenging way to work we try to approach it with a lot of fun. If you stress over music it sounds forced and that’s a bad thing, so you have fun be original and find your own sound. Also don’t milk it, way to many producers make 6 tracks from one idea!
What other music do you have in the pipeline?
We’re putting a lot of work into our own Dynamic Audio imprint at the minute. There is a lot in the pipeline from me & Faction, as well as some other artists we like the sound of. The Razor Blade EP by myself & Faction is due for general release on 15th October (available now exclusively from the Innovation website), the EP has 4 tracks on it which cover all styles of drum and bass, so hopefully there should be something for everyone on there.
Of course you have a busy DJ schedule, any events you’re looking forward to playing?
Innovation In The Dam, this for me is one of the best party’s of year. I’ve also really been enjoying the Nu:Bass Generation under 18’s events, those parties are such good fun. I’ll be playing at both the Bristol & St Albans NBG Halloween events.
Finally anything else to watch out for?
Yes we will be doing some studio production tuition sessions soon so if you are an aspiring producer watch out for details of that.
