Friction, head of the Shogun Audio empire, voice of D&B at the BBC, and globetrotting superstar DJ took a break from his busy schedule to tell us what he’s been up to and to give us some insights ahead of his performance at Innovation In The Dam next month…
You last played for us out at Innovation In The Sun this summer, what have you been up to since then? Lots of time in the studio working on new music, touring and plenty of festivals. Obviously doing my weekly BBC Radio 1 & 1 Xtra show as well. It’s been great but I’m pretty sure I’m due another holiday! You recently released ‘Freak’, which we supported on the latest episode of the Innovation Podcast.
You’re already so busy with a punishing DJ schedule & your commitments to Shogun Audio & your Radio One show, how do you find the time to get in the studio to make big tunes like that? It’s hard to fit everything in, I’m not gonna lie. But I thrive on being busy and setting my self new challenges. The last 4-5 years I’ve dedicated what little free time I’ve had to really pushing my production and it’s been one of the most satisfying things I’ve done. A lot of my classic tunes like Robocop, 3rd Degree Gurns etc etc, you can hear my sound in there, but I used to do these as co labs or would get a bit of help with them. These days, I’m engineering everything I release and its so much more satisfying.
As an experienced traveller, do you have any travel tips you can share with the Inno ravers coming out to Amsterdam? Try and avoid Ryanair!
Any big tunes in the bag that we can expect to hear you playing at Inno In The Dam? Lots of stuff from myself and the Shogun Audio artists. A lot of people have gone very dirty with their sound recently so expect lots of screwface inducing tunes!
Finally what else can we expect from you over the next few months? Working out what’s next music wise at the moment. Aside from that, I have lots of shows are booked in the diary and of course you can catch me every Monday night at 1am on BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra. See you in the Dam!
